Benjawan + Ed Say I Do in Key West! http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/12/withoutedyourdead I am very excited to share a sneak peek from Benjawan and Edward's wedding last week here in beautiful Key West, Florida! The day was as perfect as is the love these two share for each other. Every colorful detail was designed by Benjawan for her "simple beach wedding". I put that in quotations because after one meets this fun-loving and energetic bride, they understand simple is not really her way! The gorgeous teal red bottom Christian Louboutin wedding shoes had to be one of my favorite bride picks! Her wedding gown, the custom hangers, embroidered shirts for the wedding party, and the comfy socks were just to name a few details that brought such joy to the day.

After we finished photographing the bridal details, we were off to the beach for a First Look. I think it is best described by Ed.. " Benjawan took my breath away and I was speechless. I truly could not speak. She was absolutely gorgeous. I AM the luckiest man alive. I’m so glad she came into my life. She makes me happy everyday and I intend to make her happy everyday also."

The Around Key West Session was a must for this colorful bride and we had such a wonderful time doing so before the ceremony! Ed sure does know how to make his bride laugh!

Once we arrived at the beach the decor was in perfect place! Each guest was greeted with a custom water bottle, chapstick, and a fan should they have needed it during the oceanside beach ceremony at the Fort Zachary Taylor State Park!  The picturesque oceanside reception took place at the exclusive Ocean Key Resort's Hot Tin Roof! The cake topper was an EXACT ( I mean exact) replica of the couple!

Benjawan and Ed are a perfect balance for each other and really do have a fairytale story.

"I dont call him Ed to be honest, I call him MacGyver. You know like the TV show guy? Because he can do everything and make ANYTHING out of spare parts. He rescued me in so many ways when he was just my friend and I had zero monies. No strings attached he just did things for me because he is THAT nice of a guy.

I met MacGyver several years ago in 2010. He was on the police squad and the inside joke was "Without Ed, you're dead" Who knew that line would be common every time I would see Officer Shoemaker. I ended up selling his home back in 2010 because he was going thru a divorce back then. Anyways, I kept in touch with Ed because I am a fabulous Real estate agent and plus he was our friend. Then 2 years ago in 2014-2015, MacGyver was in the market to buy a house again. We ended up finding him a house after several months and multiple offers later.... this is the part where I get teary eyed because in February 2015 while I was writing up the offer on what would end up being his house, he had asked me how I was doing....?

In 2016, after two months of dating, while we were on a Mama/Daughter beach vacation, my daughter Jordan turned to me and said "why don’t you just stop dating everyone but Ed.. He loves you. You love him. You should just tell him he is your boyfriend" I just told her I wasn't ready to be exclusive but when that day comes, MacGyver will probably be the guy!

So from October 2015 thru current today - my way to relax is my beach trips whether an overnighter or a weekend or a week with and without my kids. My favorite relaxing thing to do is collect shells not just whole shells but also the little bits and pieces of shells til they fill gallon Ziplocs. I can spend hours digging thru the sand or rocks just to find these shells. I think because truly it’s those little pieces of shells that make the beach whole. I felt like I was broken into a million pieces those crazy traumatic 2 years.

Anyways we dated exclusively and next thing I know in August yes like 2 months later we went on our last summer beach trip with my boys and he proposed to me on one of our favorite beaches during sunset with the most perfect ring because he is such an amazing man!!!!

It took me one full year after our engagement to choose a wedding date but in the years of 2015-2017, MacGyver has been my rock. My quiet hard working amazing man. I am so lucky to have this man be a huge part of my life and my children's lives....... I could go on and on and on........ I love him and know that this wonderful man is my Forever!!" - Benjawan

"I start my story about Benjawan and myself which starts about May 2010 when I was introduced to Benjawan as a realtor because I needed to sell my home due to my divorce. A work colleague of mine that was also a friend at the time knew of my situation and told me that his wife was a realtor and could help with the short sell of my home. I agreed to and arranged a time to meet at my home. The evening that she arrived at my home I was waiting and as I heard her arriving vehicle pull into my driveway, I stepped outside to meet her and observed this beautiful woman with the biggest smile on her face like she was happy to see me. Looking back I wonder if she knew or felt something about me. Of course, I smiled back because her smile and personality is so contagious. While working with me, I also witnessed her big mouth laugh which I adore and it can make anyone smile and often does.  She was very professional and did sell my home very quickly which was great for my situation but it also meant that I would not get to see her smile or laugh as much as I wanted. We did create a friendship though and I promised her that when I was ready to buy another home I would call her. Little did she know how I missed her smile and laugh for the next couple years.

At the end of 2014, I began looking for a new home and called upon Benjawan to help. She was surprised because she thought that I found a new realtor and moved on. I had been approached by other realtors but was true to my promise that I would allow Benjawan the opportunity to find my new home.

Fast forward a bit and Benjawan decided to move again and asked for my assistances to help. I jumped at the opportunity to be near her. While loading and hauling, we were much more comfortable being around each other and started joking with each other and having fun. I again got to see that smile and big mouth laugh that I so adore. I realized that I liked being around her and wondered if she would stay in contact after this move was over. At one point while we were carrying boxes in the home, I just stared at her while she was walking upstairs and thought “WOW”, that’s a hot looking woman! I thought then, I sure hope we can see each other after all this is over. While moving items in the new home, I noticed there were several things such as holes in the wall and faucets needing repair so of course I offered my help to make this transition just a little easier.

The next day, I received a call from Benjawan inviting me and the other friends that helped to come over and eat dinner prepared by her to show her appreciation for our hard work. I was very reluctant to accept because I was feeling jealous of her new boyfriend and thought I should just stay away. After talking on the phone and listening to her voice, I began to melt and gave up my pride and agreed to come over for dinner. After dinner Benjawan shared some personal photos about her life with her family and herself. I was so impressed with where she has been and what she has done. I left that night wanting to know more and to get closer to her.

Benjawan did ask me to come over and fix some of the items that were in need of repair. I was happy to do so because I also got to spend time with her children and create some fun times with them. Eventually I finished fixing things and she renamed me MacGyver because I said I can fix anything.

I continued to be her little MacGyver and in turn I was able to spent time with her children too and created a close relationship with the whole family. I loved being around like I was part of the family and it seemed that Benjawan loved having me around too. Eventually we started dating and I just could not get enough of her. I thought about her all the time and found myself going to sleep and waking up with her on my mind. At first it scared me but I thought to myself, maybe I’m falling in love. The more I thought about it the more I wanted to be with her. Before I knew it I was falling. One day while we were having lunch together, I blurted out, I think I love you. Benjawan looked at me with a strange blank look on her face and said “WHAT”. I remembering saying “you don’t have to say anything.”  I just wanted her to know how I felt in case something happened to me or our situation changed. The good thing was she didn’t freak out and stop answering her phone. We continued to see each other and I loved every moment together. Benjawan did however add to the list of things to repair which meant I spent most of my time at her home.

I enjoyed being around her and being needed and believe me, she has a lot of needs and wants. I tried my best to fix and improve her home just to see her smile. I reached a point where I would do anything for her just to see her smile. I’m still on that level today. I have a need and want from her and that is to make her happy and to know that she will always be there to make me happy. I have often told her that when I’m gone, I love missing her, because it reminds me of how much I want and need her in my life.

On August 16th 2016, I proposed to her on the beach with her 3 boys. I gave her a huge diamond ring that was put in a tiny treasure chest and a note with the Question and choices like “Yes” or “No”  “Not Yet” and “Never”. I then asked her, “Will you be the better half of the best part of my life”, and guess what, She said “Yes”. She put the biggest smile on my face and warmth in my heart.

She is a very beautiful, caring, loving, honest, hard working, playful, sexy, smart woman and not to mention a great Mom. I love her and I love knowing that she loves me. I can’t wait to call her my wife and to make her proud to call me her husband. I am looking forward to growing old with Benjawan in a beach community making her happy and seeing her famous big mouth laugh.  Benjawan knows I would do anything for her in fact she still uses a phrase about me that was started a long time ago, “Without Ed, you’re dead”.  - ED

She Said Yes in Key West! http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/brittany-jimmy-she-said-in-key-west Jimmy secretively set up a proposal plan for Brittany. The plan was a sunset sail that he "won" through work with the help from a few friends and their signatures for the bidding sheet (totally made up). Once he called me to join them on the sunset sail to act part of the crew and capture the moment, I was all in! About 20 minutes into the PERFECT evening sunset sail here in Key West, Florida Jimmy proposed to Brittany on the bow of the boat. She Said Yes! Several kisses later he also had another surprise! Her favorite champagne (Billecart Salmon) and a custom label he had made for her! I mean ladies and gentleman, this is amazing, right!? :) The ring box was phenomenal as well. It was custom made so that it wasn't bulky like the classic engagement ring boxes. Great when you are trying to propose in a destination town!

Congratulations to you guys! thank you so much for letting me be a part of such a special evening in your life!

Brooke + Christian Valerio Say I DO in Key West- Casa Marina http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/valerio-key-west-wedding-casa-marina The second I met Brooke and Christian, I could feel their connection. Perhaps it is because they are high school sweethearts because they are perfect for each other.  The two are very active and love to do anything outdoors. They were engaged to be married on a hike in March 2016 in Lambertville, NJ! Key West has always had special place in their hearts. In fact, they have been been to Key West for other family weddings. It was no surprise they chose the crème de la crème here on the island, Casa Marina

The bride and groom were married oceanside in front of their closest friends and family. Christian saw his bride for the first time walking down the aisle with her father. Such a beautiful moment. The ocean waves, acoustic guitar, and the voice of Steve Torrence made for a special vow exchange. After the first kiss and a gorgeous sunset ...the party began!

The reception set up in the Henry Flager Ballroom was elegant and timeless and the 30Vice Band kept everyone on their feet! Even granny got out there and danced the night away! After the first dances and lovely dinner, the cake cutting tradition was kept and the evening of celebration continued!

The fun loving couple along with their larger than life bridal party were spectacular, and I am honored to have been a part of this wedding. Congratulations Brooke and Christian! I wish you many years of happiness!

Rachel's Key West Shopping Guide http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/rachels-key-west-shopping-guide If you’re in Key West for a wedding or a vacation, you may want to shop for a gift for someone back home or a keepsake for yourself. If you know where to look, there’s much more to the island’s opportunities for shopping than the knick knacks and t-shirts on Duval Street! There are many hidden gems that offer unique items, from eclectic jewelry to colorful home items to artsy conversation pieces. Here are some of my favorite places to go shopping in Key West, in an easily walkable order!

Salt

As the name would suggest, this shop offers wonderful local sea salts, in addition to honey, art, jewelry, pottery, and wine! The gallery is brimming with beautiful creations from local artists. Salt is a treasure trove of anything you could want to pick up as a housewarming gift or just to enjoy a taste of your time in Key West.

Art @830

There are several art galleries in Key West, and Art @830 truly stands out. Close to the Historic Seaport, this gallery is focused on local artists and staffed by knowledgeable and passionate volunteers.

Mac's Sea Garden

Mac’s Sea Garden has an eclectic mix of gifts and souvenirs. Their assortment includes hats, shirts, shells, and even kitchen items like sea sponges, magnets, and glassware! On your way in or out, don’t forget to stop and take a picture with the giant Spongeman outside. You can’t miss him!

Local Color

Local Color has two locations: one is around the corner from Mac’s Sea Garden, and the other is “the biggest little jewelry store!” Both have a wide selection of jewelry, including gorgeous bracelets and rings. You can also pick up the “ingredients" to make your own piece from their beautiful beads and special charms.

90 Miles to Cuba

Be sure to stop by this little shop and art gallery located in the Historic Seaport District. Enjoy items both old and new, from nautical antiques to modern jewelry. Shop and then get a treat at one of Kermit’s locations, just next door!

Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe

It might be Key West’s most frequently asked question: Where can you get the BEST Key lime pie? While it is nearly impossible to pick just one slice, Kermit’s is endorsed by The Food Network’s Paula Deen, and even more importantly, Conch Republic citizens ourselves! I love the frozen Key lime pie dipped in chocolate on a stick, but you can find more than KLP here. There is taffy, chutney, salsa, tea, olive oil, candy, and anything else you can think of to fulfill your wildest, limiest dreams.

Coco's Monkey

CoCo's Monkey is Key West's only Athliesure Wear Boutique. Specializing in performance wear for running, yoga, paddle boarding, fishing, and more, it's the perfect place to gear up for the island's many sporty offerings! Best yet, you'll be greeted by a s

Captain's Mermaid

This boutique, located near the Historic Seaport, offers a quirky array of gifts that mermaids and humans alike will love, including gems, shells, and chimes. Captain’s Mermaid also boasts stunning sandals, accessories, and clothing for kids and adults. There is also a ‘man bench’ in case someone in your shopping group needs to take a load off.

Kino's

Open since 1966, Kino’s is a local gem featuring handmade sandals made with natural leather, plus accessories and fun décor! Tucked away just off Duval Street, you should be able to find the perfect pair of sandals here for anyone!

Audubon House Gift Shop

This picturesque spot is adjacent to the beautiful historic Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, which are well worth visiting! The shop is run by lovely, knowledgeable people who are happy to show you around the selection of fine art and one-of-a-kind gifts, including prints of works by naturalist and ornithologist John James Audubon.

Isle Cook

Isle Cook is known for its enjoyable cooking classes and wine tastings. Check out its event schedule to see what’s coming up! Otherwise, stop in to browse an array of kitchenware that make great gifts or additions to your home. From practical to adorable (like a pitcher shaped like a fish that gurgles when poured!), you’ll be reminded of Key West every time you cook!

Jean-Pierre Klifa Paris

If you want to add some high fashion into your wardrobe, swing by this shop on Simonton Street. Jean-Pierre Klifa is a French-born, Miami-based designer who creates gorgeous pieces with bold prints. Stop in and take home a dress, top, pair of pants, scarf, or handbag!

Island Style Galleries

Enjoy a vibrant range of American arts and crafts. The creative pieces are a tribute to the natural beauty of island life. This nationally-recognized retailer also offers home furnishings, decorations, fashion, and striking jewelry.

Guild Hall Gallery

This gem on Duval Street is a must-see during your Key West visit! It began as an artist co-op in 1976, and today, the creators - including artists in residence - are still able to showcase their work in the original location.

Besame Mucho

Established in 1999, this charming Petronia Street shop is full of romantic, old-world charm. The small, cute shop has a lovely aesthetic that you won’t want to miss!

Wanderlust

Opened in 2010, Wanderlust is by travel-lovers for travel-lovers. Here, you’ll find fashion, accessories, and crafts that colorfully express beach culture. There are local items as well as treasures from the coasts of California, England, and more.

The Petronia Island Store

Petronia Island, on Whitehead Street, is all about fairly traded, handmade pieces that reflect the spirit of our island. Enjoy a serene browsing experience and a beautiful selection of items.

COAST

COAST embodies the cool spirit of beach life and offers t-shirts with sleek designs and other island-y goods. But as it explains, "we’re about more than those tangible things that you see on the showroom floor and in the web store." To experience the COAST philosophy for yourself, head to its popup shop on Whitehead Street, just a block off Duval.

The Green Pineapple

This zen, chic shop is a locals’ favorite! Near the south end of Duval Street, The Green Pineapple eco-friendly shop and yoga studio offers apparel, jewelry, and a healthy menu including coffee, tea, wine, and dessert. In the midst of a busy day, this is the perfect place to re-energize with a yoga class, light shopping, and bite to eat.

Donna + Patrick Wilson Key West Wedding Hyatt 11.4.17 http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/wilson-key-west-wedding I met Donna and Patrick months before the wedding for an Around Key West Session. Amazing people on the inside and the out. The kind of people you just feel good around! The two met on Chemistry.com and decided to meet for a coffee. Well, they have been together since that coffee eight years ago! The two decided on a destination wedding here in Key West and we are sure glad they did! Only a month after clean up of Irma, they kept their wedding plans!

Donna has worked at the University of Maryland for the past 22 years and their mascot is a terrapin which is "really just a big turtle!" So when checking out possible wedding venues, the turtles at Hyatt Centric  were a sign and they planned for a wedding the following year! Their oceanside ceremony on November 4th, 2017 was performed by a close friend and the reception immediately followed at the Marquesa Room overlooking the famous Key West sunset. There were so many thoughtful little touches at this wedding.  Visualize Entertainment set up a large screen with photos of each guest and how they met. It was a very kind gesture by the bride and groom to include everyone, and something I had not seen at a wedding before. The couple also opted to have guests pose at the outdoor photo booth! The M&M's in the vintage bottles, the top notch food selection, and the array of  florals and decor were well thought of. The reception was just a blast! Everyone danced.. I mean... everyone! Scott, the DJ kept everyone shaking until the very end where guests scooted on down for a unforgettable sparkler send off! A perfect ending to a perfect wedding day!

I enjoyed creating with these love birds especially since Patrick has a background with a camera. Donna, your vision really came to life! Congratulations to you and your families!

Kate + Billy Fox- Key West Wedding at Pier House http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/kate-billy-fox--key-west-wedding-at-pier-house Kate and Billy are the perfect balance for each other! The two were set up by mutual friends at the end of September in 2013. After holding the ring for almost nine months, he proposed at The Point in December 2016! They love spending time on their boat so it's no surprise they wanted to be by the water for their destination wedding in Key West, Florida! Kate got ready with all her beautiful details including jewelry from her grandparents at their Duval Street condo and then we headed to the Pier House for a First Look

The ceremony was a picture perfect set up by Karro Events! Guests watched Kate and Billy say I Do with their toes in the sand while sail boats passed for the evening sunset sail. Afterwards, the reception began with Chris Thomas playing live music while the bride and groom enjoyed appetizers and the Key West sunset. After dancing the night away, they "cut the cake" in true Key West fashion... Key lime pie from the best, Blue Heaven!

It was such a pleasure being a part of such a special day with you and your families. Congratulations!

Rachel + Jacob McCabe- Southernmost on the Beach Wedding http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/mccabekeywestwedding Rachel and Jacob met through Rachel's Maid of Honor, also Rachael! The first day the best friends moved in together, Rachel met her new roommates's brother Jake. I would like to say the rest is history, but I think it was a very awesome beginning for these two. They were engaged via a surprise at Meadow Brooke Hall a private mansion in Michigan. Jake walked Rachel through the nature trail and proposed in the rose garden! They decided on a destination wedding and were married here in Key West, Florida on the beach with an ocean backdrop in front of their closest friends and family!

The wedding day was absolutely perfect! Blue skies, palm trees, and toes in the sand at the premier Southernmost Beach Resort!  After the ceremony the reception was also on the beach closer to the gorgeous sunset! Everyone had a wonderful time and the food and drinks kept everyone happy while we finished some fun bridal party photos! The sunset was just a nice topper for Rachel and Jake! Jake (literally) swept Rachel off her feet for the first dance and the rest of the night was filled with laughter and celebration! It was an honor to be a part of your wedding day! Congratulations to you and your families!

A Local's Take on Fantasy Fest 2017 http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/fantasy-fest-2017 I have several clients who have asked me about Fantasy Fest here in Key West! If you haven't experienced this unique event, it is just a little different than your traditional Halloween celebration.

The very first Fantasy Fest was held in 1979 when two local businessmen, Tony Falcone and the late Bill Conkle, organized a party to bring more business to the island during a typically slow season. Fantasy Fest has certainly boosted the economy in Key West by filling up hotels, local bars, and restaurants during this time period. Job well done, boys!

It is said that the number of people that join this festival every year ranges from 25,000 to 75,000. The event has escalated to a ten-day celebration that includes balls, a large parade with floats, costume competitions, fundraisers for AIDS and other great causes, body painting, drag queen contests, costume parties, and pet and neighborhood parades for the whole family!"

Sometimes Fantasy Fest can be overwhelming for locals, but this year seemed to bring back the original vision that was sparked in years past by so many creative people! After the Florida Keys were hit so hard by Hurricane Irma, it was like the island needed to blow off a little steam and have fun again. The numbers were down, but the spirit of the festival - for me and many others here - was as strong as ever. Here is a local's take on Fantasy Fest 2017!

The Goombay Festival is the family-friendly kick-off to Fantasy Fest and takes place in the streets of Bahama Village. It starts on Friday and continues the next day Saturday from noon to midnight. There are a few must-dos, whether it's your first or 50th time!

  • Shop - Stop in some of the great local shops like Coast, Wanderlust, and Besame Mucho.
  • Drink - Order a Goombay Smash cocktail from the wonderful bartenders at Blue Heaven - Robyn, Dustan, and Wendy are usually at the bar right in front of the gift shop!
  • Listen - Blue Heaven, Andy's Cabana, and the stage at the end of Petronia Street all feature great local music. Stop in, relax, and enjoy!
  • Eat - Try some conch salad (aka conch ceviche), which can be found at many places, but go to Mr. Johnson at Johnson's Grocery. Not only are you supporting an awesome local family, but it is the best ever! Also, make sure to try an arepa - a delicious stuffed corn cake! These can found at almost every booth. I always pick one that is still on the grill.
  • Experience - For those who like a good ol' fair ride and funnel cake, walk all the way down to the west end of Petronia Street and catch a ride!

On the first Sunday of Fantasy Fest is a favorite event for family fun: the Zombie Bike Ride! It begins at East Martello (the home of Robert the Doll, who is scary in his own right!) and ends on Duval Street with street parties at the Tiki House, Amigo's, and Bagatelle. Artists such as the famous Tony Gregory, Crystal Smith, and Rasa Tubyte set up and paint zombie masterpieces.

"WeCycle Bike Shop's Zombie Bike Ride was created in 2009 by Marky Pierson of Wonderdog Studios and Evan Haskell & Chris Needham of WeCycle Bike Shop. The bike ride quickly grew from a couple hundred people to nearly 5,000 in 2013. The ride is a little over four miles long and takes a leisurely pace down US1 along the Atlantic Ocean, right at sunset. The Zombie Ride has grown to epic proportion with the help of thousands of fun-loving, bike-riding, costume-sporting, and rock-and-roll townspeople. A police escort leads the ride down US1, past the Zombie Beach Bash at Salute! On The Beach, and down to Duval Street where the ZombieFest continues." - Zombiebikeride.com

The famous Tutu Party is on the Tuesday of Fantasy Fest, and the Pet Masquerade is held on Wednesday. This family-friendly event takes place at the beautiful Casa Marina every year. The sand sculpture there said it all after our battle with Hurricane Irma this year: "We are 1!" This fun event benefits the Lower Keys Friends of Animals, Inc. You will find animals and their owners dressed to the nines, sometimes matching each other! The two- and four-legged entrants are in it for fun, but there are trophy prizes, too. I think my favorite this year was Copper, who decided he just wanted to hang out in the water and watch everyone from there! The Pet Masquerade supports a great cause and is always a great time!

“Let It Fly” was the theme for the Third Annual Smallest Parade in the Universe on Thursday at the Key West Theater on Eaton Street! A miniature procession of artist-made 18” floats bobbles down a make believe Duval Street backdrop as the audience watches both the live parade and simultaneous large screen streaming videos. This whimsical event benefits MARC, Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens, a non-profit providing life services for Monroe County’s adult developmentally and intellectually disabled residents.

Now to Friday of Fantasy Fest and one of MY favorite events: the locals walking parade! After a lot of planning and no time to actually work on my costume until the day before, I came up with a tree fairy of sorts. It was my first attempt at a headpiece, and it came out pretty darn good! All the supplies were purchased locally at Home Depot, The Seam Shoppe, Halloween Shop, and the new hair supply shop on White Street. Locals and a few savvy tourists join in for a stroll down Duval in their best costumes. Many are homemade and are just INCREDIBLE. Layla Laser and her daughter are the ones to watch every year!

On Saturday of Fantasy Fest week, we have the official parade! This year, I was lucky enough to participate with the amazingly creative Wonderdog team and walk first with them. The theme of the float was "Power to the People!"

"Key West Weirdos, Bringing Back the Weird, Wild & Wacky, Future is Female, Unity, Quality, Diversity. Our lead FEST Float represents the Heart of Key West - her people! Colorful, diverse, magical, and united. The old & new weirdos return in full force. Power to the eccentric, artistic, and quirky citizens of Key West. There will be various small 'crews' of people with coordinating/matching costumes that will represent some of the characters from the 2017 poster. This year's poster is a celebration of artwork from previous Fantasy Fest posters over the past 30+ years. Also featured are props and set pieces from the Zombie Bike Ride, Tutu Tuesday, and the Masquerade March." -Marky Pierson

Sunday is Children's Day at Bayview Park from noon to 5 pm, where kids get their faces painted and have a little fun too! There are also rides, food, and a costume contest for the kiddos, too!

However, it ain't over to the fat lady sings! From 4-8pm, the last official party of Fantasy Fest happens every year at LaTe Da, where the owner former Fantasy Fest King, Christopher Rounds, knows how to throw a wonderful party! We will see you next year, everybody!

Nicole+ Todd Berry Say I Do at Pier House in Key West http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/11/nicole-todd-berry-say-i-do-at-pier-house-in-key-west Nicole and Todd met about three years ago and just love being around each other! The two decided to say I DO here in Key West Florida at the beautiful Pier House Resort! The flowers and decor against the ocean backdrop was simply stunning. The Southernmost Reverend preformed a gorgeous ceremony in front of Nicole and Todd's closest friends and family. The ceremony and reception took place right on the beach where the Miller Lite and beautiful breeze flowed during the reception. Dad's speech to the groom included passing along the duties including credit card bills making for quite a humorous speech! I really enjoyed the attention to details from start to finish. From the beautiful sea shells in the flowers, the driftwood on the reception tables, and the cupcake sushi favors at the end. Great job by the Say Yes team and the bride Nicole.

Congratulations and best wishes to you and your families. Enjoy your sneak peek!

Sara + Andrew are getting Married!! http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/10/sara-andrew-are-getting-married Sara and Andrew are such a beautiful couple. Inside and out. I had such a great time with these two on the Around Key West session. The couple met almost three years at the Ivy in Atlanta. They love spending together in the kitchen with fabulous meals and cheese plates! Love it! I do too. :)

I enjoyed scouting out new locations on this session and figured they would be perfect for this couple. Andrew grew up a portion of time in Key West and they both have spent some time here on the island. Green Parrot was a must stop and of course so was the West Martello Tower (aka as Garden Club) where they will be married on April 29th, 2018! So happy for you both!

Katharine + Dean Say I Do in Key West! http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/10/katharine-dean-say-i-do-in-key-west I have to say this is one of my favorite love stories! This gorgeous couple met in January 2014 on a flight from Ft Lauderdale to JFK. Katharine sent the pilot (Dean) up a note and the rest was history!

Katharine and Dean continued writing their history and were married at Fort Zachary Taylor here in Key West, Florida on 10.7.17. No hurricane was going to stop this wedding! Katharine had "Irma he is mine" engraved in Dean's ring. Just perfect!  The ceremony took place inside the historical fort and they were surrounded by their closest friends and family. The trolley did a loop around to the 90 miles to Cuba famous buoy. The buoy still had it's mark from the winds of Irma. I love this photos so much because now the buoy has already been re painted since the wedding. The party continued at the beautiful Bagatelle on Duval Street where cocktails and dinner were served outside on the veranda overlooking the famous Duval Street. Congratulations to you and your families!

Key West Family Photos- Post Irma http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/10/key-west-family-photos--post-irma There are so many good people out there who have sent us messages, cards, you name it to help with the recovery of Hurricane Irma. It has been so appreciated! I must also mention those folks who had plans to visit Key West with their family that kept their plans! For that, Key West thanks you!

Here are some fun photos I took at Smathers Beach earlier this month with the Smith Family. They come here every year and it was no surprise this fun family is from Kentucky! Thank you for visiting and being such great clients! It was a real bonus to get a boat in your family photos too! :)

Mr + Mrs Wylie Say I Do at Casa Marina http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/9/mr-mrs-wylie-say-i-do-at-casa-marina Congratulations to this super fun couple! After meeting while coaching their daughter's softball teams these two knew from the get go they were meant to be! Diana and Alexander were married at the beautiful Casa Marina on September 2nd, 2017! The day was filled with tears, laughter, wonderful food, and a heck of a good party!

They began the day with a gorgeous beach wedding performed by Steve Torrence. The couple was surrounded by their closest friends and modern day Brady Bunch Family! There are nine children between the two.The evening continued with decadent appetizers and dinner served by the Casa Marina. They dance through the evening and finished the night off with some sparklers and a ol' fashion September in Keys cool down... A jump in the pool!

Cheers to you and your family! I wish you many years of happy tears!

Rachel’s Guide to Key West’s Best Rehearsal Dinner Restaurants http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/9/rachel-s-guide-to-key-west-s-best-rehearsal-dinner-restaurants Sharing a wonderful meal with loved ones is often a cherished part of wedding festivities. A rehearsal dinner welcomes guests and sets the stage for the big day, or, a restaurant can be the destination after a small, intimate beach wedding. No matter what kind or size of wedding you've decided on, Key West has many beautiful and classic restaurants to offer. Here is my list of recommended wedding dinner locations that can be a part of your celebration!

Bagatelle

This elegant restaurant, in a house built in 1884, has wraparound balconies and incredible lobster mac and cheese. But for events, its rooftop Moon Lounge is a spectacular choice: spacious yet intimate and bright with fire features and string lights. Bagatelle can accommodate groups as small as 30 or as large as 250 in the whole restaurant.

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven is a Key West icon and a favorite among visitors and locals alike. They serve incredible Floridian-Caribbean cuisine in a funky, tropical setting inhabited by free-roaming chickens and cats. Despite the restaurant's well-deserved popularity, the upstairs area feels off the beaten path for events of 21 to 40 people. Joan has been doing events at Blue Heaven for years and will take great care of you!

Commodore Restaurant

This elegant upstairs space offers stunning Old Town Harbor views. The Private Dining Room can accommodate up to 40 people for a sit-down dinner and 75 people for cocktails. The Main Dining Room is also available for private functions and can accommodate up to 110 people for a sit-down dinner.

First Flight

First Flight is known for being the birthplace of Pan American World Airways (its first tickets were sold out of the building in 1927!) as well as the country's southernmost brewery! The lush garden patio or gorgeous upper deck are both memorable settings for a rehearsal dinner. The menu and event team are superb, too!

Hot Tin Roof at Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Locals and tourists alike consistently recognize the Hot Tin Roof restaurant of Ocean Key Resort & Spa as a "don't-miss" restaurant! It’s the perfect perch for spectacular sunsets overlooking the Sunset Pier at the end of Mallory Square. One of my personal favorites because of the amazing view. It also offers a spectacular brunch on the weekends. Go for the chicken and waffles for sure!

Harbour View Café at Pier House Resort & Spa

A beautiful setting for you and your guests! The Harbour View Café features pristine views of the Gulf of Mexico and Pier House's private white sand beach. The menu features a variety of island-inspired dishes and Caribbean cuisine. Seating is available on the outside deck or indoors with air conditioning.

Roof Top Café

Surrounded by flowering bougainvillea and cool tropical breezes, the casual elegance of the Roof Top Café has overlooked historic Key West for almost 30 years. Located near historic Mallory Square, Roof Top Café is able to accommodate large parties for indoor and outdoor events and offers special event menus to simplify your plans and budget.

SHOR American Seafood Grill at Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa

When in Key West, dining on local fare from land and sea is essential. At the full-service SHOR American Seafood Grill, you will find a sophisticated space in the Hyatt Resort presenting area-sourced seafood along with breathtaking harbor views!

What's Conch Got to Do with it? http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/8/whats-conch-got-to-do-with-it If you’re considering a trip to Key West for a wedding, honeymoon, or just for fun, you’ve probably heard its nickname, the Conch Republic!

The story behind this name goes all the way back to the Revolutionary War. After America won its independence, those still loyal to the British, called Tories, fled to the nearest Crown soil: the Bahamas. Unfortunately for them, the British Parliament started taxing Bahamian colonists on imported food just like they had taxed Bostonians’ tea. In response, the locals said they’re rather eat conch - a large sea snail pronounced “konk” - than pay those taxes. And that’s what they did! Bahamians became known as Conchs, and eventually, many descendants of those Tories immigrated to Key West.

akwsneak-2akwsneak-2

Fast forward to April 18, 1982, when the U.S. federal government blocked U.S. Route 1, also known as “The Overseas Highway.” Intending to prevent drug trafficking and undocumented immigration, the feds started intrusive vehicle searching, causing massive traffic delays on the only road connecting Key West to the mainland. The major inconvenience, as well as the negative effect on tourism, did not sit well with islanders. On April 23, 1982, then-mayor Dennis Wardlow read the “Conch Republic Proclamation of Secession,” declaring Key West its own micronation. Hard, stale Cuban bread loaves were brandished as weapons, and the U.S. flag was replaced with a blue and yellow one featuring a conch shell.

armitagewedding-452armitagewedding-452

The not-so-intimidating rebellion didn’t last long, but luckily, the publicity around the event led to the swift removal of the roadblock. To this day, Conch Republic pride remains, and Key West residents are still called Conchs. Natives are sometimes referred to as “Saltwater Conchs,” and if you weren’t born here but have lived here for over seven years, you earn the term of “Freshwater Conch.” That’s me! After growing up in Kentucky, several years ago I fell in love with Key West’s character.

Now that I’ve photographed weddings here for over a decade, I know the island like the back of my hand. If you have a specific type of spot in mind for a photo shoot, whether it’s scenic, historic, or offbeat, I can recommend the perfect location. I’m always happy to brainstorm places with you that complement your personal style or unique relationship. There are countless settings here for engagement or wedding photography sessions, or just because!

I also love sharing my favorite places to get the most out of your visit to the Conch Republic. Please feel free to check out my guides!

Callie and John Dimond Say Yes in Key West on 7.171.7 http://www.racheleligon.com/blog/2017/7/callie-and-john-dimond-say-yes-in-key-west Callie and John love Key West and opted for the sunset Around Key West Session two days before they said their I Do's.  The couple got ready at the gorgeous Ocean Key property where they chose a First Look option. It was emotional and super sweet. It was also nice to grab a few photos with friends and family prior to the Trolley ride over to the ceremony!

The Dimonds were married at Fort Zachary Taylor on the lucky date 7.17.17 at 7:17pm! Yes, lucky 7's for this adorable couple!

Best wishes to you and your families. I had a wonderful time capturing your perfect wedding day!  #destinationdimond
